How it works

Three stages. One framework. One relationship.

The programs are designed as a continuum, from custody or program entry, through reentry, to publication. Every stage is also complete on its own, so a person can enter at the point that fits their life right now.

Shared foundations

What stays the same at every stage

The Four Factors

Land, Labor, Capital and Entrepreneurship organize every lesson, always in the same colors.

The framework

The same session rhythm

Every session follows the same 12 steps, so participants know what comes next and any trained facilitator can pick up any week.

Creation first

Half of every session is hands-on: writing, beat-making, recording. Nobody leaves without having made something.

Choice, always

Every reflection, journal entry and share-out is opt-in. “Pass” is always an acceptable answer.

No grading of creative work

Lyrics are never corrected, graded or used as behavioral evidence. Peer feedback is strengths-first and only on craft.

The SC-Citizen

The crowned figure stands for the participant: inside the system, moving through it with intention.

Inside a session

Three hours, the same shape every week

Predictable structure lowers stress. Participants recognize the rhythm by week two and can focus on the work.

Every 3-hour session splits 25% reflection, 25% learning and 50% creation, across the same 12 steps each week.

Continuity of relationship

The same person on both sides of the gate

Next Verse continues with the same facilitator, the same language and the same structure from custody into the community. A mid-arc handoff to a stranger is avoided wherever possible.

  1. CustodyFirst Verse begins inside the facility or at program entry.
  2. TransitionSame facilitator, same language, same structure as release approaches.
  3. CommunityNext Verse continues in reentry or transitional housing.
  4. Ongoing connectionLast Verse keeps work, mentors and opportunity within reach.
Reentry pathway: the SC-Citizen figure walks a bridge from a facility on one shore to the city on the other. One continuous gold thread runs the length of the bridge, showing the same relationship carried from custody, through transition, into the community and ongoing connection.

Start anywhere

Every stage stands on its own

No one has to finish one stage to earn the next. The stages connect best as a continuum, and each one is a complete experience for whoever starts there.

Start at First Verse

From day one

Name the system, learn the Four Factors, write and record, and finish with a First Verse Blueprint and a mixed song.

Skills that reinforce each other

The creative work builds habits that carry into school, work and home. These skills grow together rather than in a fixed order.

Five life skills that reinforce each other: self-awareness, communication, emotional regulation, financial literacy and goal-setting.
